I have begun working with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Columbia as an intern and I could not be any more excited. I’m still job searching and I wanted to use my free time to not only grow my job skills and make connections, but to really gain experience in a field that interests me. I’ve always been very cause oriented and I hope to find a career working with a company or organization that works for the positive benefit of others.
If you haven’t heard of RMHC or aren’t sure of what they do, they are a wonderful organization whose mission is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children. The main way RMHC supports children is by providing a home away from home to the families of children dealing with illnesses.
The Ronald McDonald House and Ronald McDonald House Family Room give families a place to go while their child is in the hospital. Many times families must travel far away from home for their child to receive treatment, this can lead to many nights away from home which then adds hotel bills to already high medical treatments. Ronald McDonald House gives families a free place to stay, and in most areas, the houses are located within walking distance to the children’s hospital.
During my first week I was able to attend their Art with a Heart fundraiser to benefit the RMHC of Columbia. The event featured fine arts and crafts and included tastings from local restaurants, Spork and The Melting Pot. Local musician, Don Russo, provided musical entertainment and Sam’s Fine Wine & Spirits provided beverages. It was a lovely event full of people there to support a wonderful cause.
Fantastic sampling from The Melting Pot
They gave out pearls in honor of their 30th anniversary. Carl decided to wear mine.
The Smith family served as the events special guests. The Smith’s have been staying at the Ronald McDonald House since their daughter Macie Danielle was born October 23rd weighing only 14oz. Her and her twin brother were given a 30% chance of survival, her brother unfortunately passed but Macie Danielle continues to fight on. Thanks to the RMHC of Columbia, her family has been able to stay close by in the 4 months Macie Danielle has been in the hospital.
If you want to help RMHC support families like the Smith’s, check out your local Ronald McDonald House Charities for ways you can help.
