It’s Monday.  The new week has started and we have to survive with one less hour in the day.  I don’t think I’m the only one, but I want that hour back.  I know by the end of the week I wont miss it, but right now, I most certainly do.  With this month being all about taking care of you, I want to share a list of things to do for yourself to bring some more happy to your day.

10 things to do for yourself this week

Go to bed earlier.

Losing that one hour ruined everything for me.  My inner alarm clock has no idea what is going on. Do yourself a favor and go to bed at least an hour earlier than normal.  It will help you adjust to the time change, plus most of us would benefit from more sleep.

Eat breakfast.

They aren’t lying when they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  I love food, so every meal is super important to me, but starting your morning off by waking up your metabolism with something healthy will start your day off right.  Are you really bad at making breakfast like I am?  There’s no shame in buying the frozen breakfast sandwiches from the store.  Just be sure to check the labels because not all frozen breakfasts are created equal.

Call someone you haven’t talked to in a long time.

I’m not entirely convinced social media connects us as much as we’d like to think.  Yes it helps us creep on everyone from the shadows, but how often do you truly interact with your friends?  Give one of them a phone call this week.  I guarantee it will be much more satisfying than checking their Facebook page and will bring both of you a lot more joy.

Don’t buy that thing you think you need or want.

Think back the your purchases from the past month.  How much of what you bought did you truly need?  I mean really really need.  We all know that stuff isn’t what makes us happy, but try and put that into practice this week.  Every time you think you need that milkshake from Dairy Queen, tell yourself no and save the money.  You could even give the next item on this list a try.

Take a walk outside.

Fresh air and sunshine will always do the body good.  I know that it may not be the warmest weather where you are, but put on some extra layers and take a short walk.

Trade an unhealthy food for a healthy one.

This one needs no explanation.  We all know what’s good to eat and what’s not.  Trade your soda for a glass of water.  Order the fruit cup instead of the fries.  Maybe you’ll find you like the healthier option.

Clean out your expired makeup and clean the brushes.

I sad as it is, makeup actually does expire.  It’s not something you really think about, but it happens.  Check out this list of when makeup expires and give your makeup bag a good purge.  Give your brushes a good cleaning too.

Finally let go of those clothes you say you’re going to wear but never do.

I promise you a smaller wardrobe is better.  I never had a lot of clothes to begin with, but once I got rid of 50% of my clothes I honestly felt like I had just as much stuff as before.  When you have a closet full of things you don’t wear, you have the “I have nothing to wear,” issue because you’re looking at all the stuff you don’t like.  When you’re closet is filled of only things you actually do wear, picking out an outfit isn’t near as difficult.

Give yourself a compliment daily.

We’re too hard on ourselves.  There is too much criticism in the world for us to put ourselves down. Take the time each day to notice something you love about yourself.  Maybe even write a list of 10 things you like about yourself.  It’s your body and your life, you should be your number one fan.

Give someone else a compliment daily.

Like I said, there’s so much criticism in the world, so be a positive voice to those around you.  Give out meaningful compliments to the people you interact with.  If you want to go beyond that, join our Love It Forward movement.  As you work to look more positively on yourself, carry that attitude to those in your life.

BONUS: Do that one task you’ve been dreading for so long.

I’m sure there is probably something this very moment that you really don’t want to do.  Maybe you’ve been putting it off for days, maybe even months.  It could be not sending an email or not scheduling that doctors appointment.  Suck it up and do it today.  Most likely the stress you are putting on yourself by not doing it is worse than actually going through with it.

      I totally agree! We can be our own worst enemies. I’ve given myself the challenge of giving myself a compliment as well as another person a compliment daily and finding something nice and meaningful to say to myself is embarassingly hard.     I absolutely love this post, Katie! It’s proof that you can treat yourself well by doing little things. I have to second getting rid of clothes that don’t make you feel AMAZING! When you’re surrounded only by the items that you love, it’s easier to feel good about yourself (and it’s waaay easier to get dressed in the morning!) I definitely needed that reminder to wash my makeup brushes though… whoops!

      I’m so glad you love it! I feel like we’re all so guilty of forgetting to take care of ourselves. I don’t even want to talk about my makeup brushes :/ it was definitely included on the list because it’s something that I’m soooooo guilty of not doing.

  • I like the idea of getting rid of some clothes so its not always the same thing…I have nothing to wear. I hate that. I might go through my closet this weekend. And I need to go to sleep early but that never works for me.

      Going to sleep seems to be the thing that everyone knows they should do, they can just never manage to pull off. At least that’s the way it seems to be for me haha. I’ve found that setting a time to go to bed early on or resolving to go to bed just 15 or 20 minutes earlier than normal helps. I totally support going through your closet. Even if you just get rid of a little bit at a time, it will make such a difference. It can be tedious, but the benefit of only have the things you like in your closet makes it all worth it. I hope you give it a try and good luck if you do!

      Yeah, makeup brushes are definitely on the list because it’s the most difficult thing for me to do. Like, I’m so bad about it I don’t even want to talk about it, it’s too shameful haha.

    I love this, Katie! Taking time to do things for yourself is so crucial! What’s even better is that you kept a lot of it productive. A lot of times we think doing something for ourselves is treating ourselves, but you’re encouraging us to say no to spending money and yes to healthy living, which I love! Its l1 ike discipline that treats you well! So perfect. I will be taking a lot of these into account this week

      I’m glad you love it! I’m the worst about “treating myself” by doing literally absolutely nothing or eating something sooooooo unhealthy for me. Since I’ve made this list I’ve been a lot better about keeping a balance to things. I committed to the give myself a compliment/give a compliment and it was really great.
